It will be held in Brazil and you may think that it is quite exaggerated to have 2 big sportive events one beside the other (almost) since the games in 2016 in Rio, but at least this time is soccer!

Many things could happen, some would argue that since Brazil is the place where the cup will be held they will be the winners, but it is not going to be like that necessarily. Soccer can have interesting changes that are not always as one would expect. But well, you can expect many things as for this interesting team that is Brazil.

Ecuador is a soccer team that has been little underrated even if they are actually quite nice in soccer. It is not like they are a strong as their neighbors Argentina or Brazil either, but it does not mean that they cannot reach that level at some point.

[Juan Carlos Ferro]: Chapecoense: the Tragedy of the Dreamers

To think about football is to think about joy, excitement, passion, fun and many more adjectives. However, on November 28^th, 2016, football suffered an injury. The plane of the Chapecoense Football Asociation from Brazil crashed on its way to Medellin, where they were going to play the final of the South American Cup against Atlético Nacional.

On November 29^th, Conmebol released a statement which said that the Colombian authorities notified that the plane in which the Brazilian team was travelling suffered an accident. The Colombian police confirmed that 75 out 81 people who were on the plane died and six survivors had been taken to the hospital with injuries.

The plane was carrying 68 passengers, 9 crew members, and 21 of the passengers were journalists, of whom just one survived. Among the survivors were:

Alan Ruschel, who suffered spinal injuries, according to the doctors.
Two goalkeepers, Jackson Follman and Marcos Danilo. Danilo died shortly.
One team’s delegation, a Bolivian flight attendant and a journalist.

Juan Carlos Ferro: Tribute to the Chapecoense Team

It is normal and understandable that after a tragedy like this one, grief and sadness comes along. However, following this event, some small news of happiness arrived unexpectedly. The Brazilian team was awarded the South American Cup by the Conmebol. The Atlético Nacional requested this action; also the Colombian team received a Fair play award due to their “spirit of peace, understanding and fair play.” Different players from around the world offer their services to play with the Chapecoense which lost almost all its players in the crash. Footballers like Ronaldinho Gaucho from Brazil and Eidur Gudjohnsenn from Iceland among them.

As a metaphor to life, football also has its ups and downs. However, we have to remember the moments of joy, passion and excitement that this team gave its fans and supporters. Teams around the globe forgot the differences and joined in silence to honor eleven of their brothers who left the field of the game earlier than expected.

For many years, Venezuela has been known in South America as a baseball playing country. Football has always been neglected financially, even though a lot of people practice it in the nation. Within the course of the years, The National team has gained two nicknames, one positive and the other negative. The negative one is the Cinderella, due to the fact that it has always been innocent and naive in front of its adversaries, which cost them a lot of defeats. The other one is La Vinotinto, because of the color of it shirt. This is a name that would later meant respect and even admiration by many.

Being the only country in South America that has never gone to a World Cup it is difficult to digest. In the year 2002 things started to change with the arrival of Richard Páez. One of his successes was the victory against Uruguay 3 – 0 as a visitor. This awakened a fever for the sport that it has not been felt in many years by the Venezuelans. People started to believe that the miracle finally might be able to happen. La Vinotinto in the World Cup.

Sadly, the miracle was not possible. In the year 2010, Richard Páez resigned as the coach of The National Team. But not everything is bad. There have been some good aspects of the maturity of La Vinotinto:

Venezuela went to the U-20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009.
In 2012, Salomón Rondón became the most expensive Venezuelan footballer in history when he signed for the FK Rubin Kazan.
This year, Tomás Rincón, the captain of La Vinotinto, is taking the physical exams to join the Italian Football Club Juventus.

Venezuela is a country with many possibilities. It is capable of everything, as well as its people. The miracle, sooner than later will be possible, not only in football, but in everything else.

[Juan Carlos Ferro]: El Diego!

Diego Armando Maradona was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 30^th, 1960. He is considered by many the best football player of the century and by many more he has been called the greatest football player in the world! He is the son of Diego and Dalma, has five siblings, three older sister and two younger brothers. With 5’4 few people would have thought he was a talented player. Little do they know, Diego would go to become one of the best players of this discipline.

In 1979, he became the youngest player to join the National Team and led them to win the Junior World Cup. At the age of 21, he joined the prestigious Argentina’s Boca Junior, which he also help winning the national championship. He then was transferred to Fc Barcelona, where he only played two years, and finally in 1984, he went to play with SSC Napoli, where he had the best years of his career.

However, not everything was silver and gold for the Argentinean footballer. Things would start to fall apart:

In 1991, he was banned for 15 months from football after test result showed traces of cocaine.
In 1992, he returned to football overweight and with a son outside of his marriage with Claudia Villafañe.
In 1994, he was suspended from football one more time, after test result showed the used of five ephedrine. This caused Maradona to leave the National Team in the middle of the United States World Cup.

Many times throughout history, El Pelusa has been compared to Brazilian player Pelé. There is no doubt both players are extraordinary, nevertheless, El Diego has always been overshadow by the King of football. It is possible because of his dark side and problems with drugs. Maradona has always been loved by many and also hated by others, but there is one thing he cannot be, and that is to be ignored.
